Estate Cleanout Dumpster Guide

How to plan an estate cleanout with a dumpster: sorting, sizing, timing, and items that need special handling.

Sort before you toss

Set aside items to keep, donate, or sell before the dumpster arrives so loading goes faster.

Which size?

A 15-yard suits a single room or attic. A 20-yard suits a larger estate cleanout. A 30-yard suits a full-home cleanout.

Items that need special handling

Appliances, mattresses, electronics, paint, chemicals, and tires are often restricted. Check before loading.

Generally accepted

Typical household and light renovation debris.

  • Household junk and clutter
  • Furniture (sofas, tables, chairs, dressers)
  • Boxes, toys, and general stored items
  • Drywall, trim, and framing lumber
  • Flooring and carpet
  • Cabinets, countertops, and fixtures
  • Yard debris such as brush and old fencing

Requires approval

May be allowed with review, weight limits, or added charges. List these on your quote request.

  • Concrete, brick, and asphalt
  • Soil, dirt, sod, and rock
  • Roofing shingles
  • Tile and plaster in large quantities
  • Appliances
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Tires

Not accepted

Do not place these in the dumpster. Ask your town about proper disposal.

  • Hazardous or toxic materials
  • Paint, solvents, and chemicals
  • Batteries
  • Fuel, oil, and propane tanks
  • Medical waste

Timing

Sorting takes time. The "Up to 7 days" package often fits estate work better than 3 days.
